Summer Beckons
Music of Sally Greenaway
Summer Beckons is a pastoral vignette for violin and piano by Australian composer Sally Greenaway. The piece captures the seasonal anticipation described in Martina Hoffman’s poem My Love Is A House:
In summer the walls are covered
with blossoms and buds
and tendrils reaching.
Featuring virtuoso violinist Barbara Jane Gilby, accompanied by Sally Greenaway at the piano, the music shimmers, expands in vivid wonder, evoking plants springing forth, tendrils reaching and leaves delicately unfurling towards the sun.
"Barbara Jane Gilby's expressive violin playing brings a particular beauty to the piece" says Sally. "Especially the middle section, where the violin bow ricochet's effervescently across the strings. It's very atmospheric."
Greenaway was invited to be part of a multi-composer commissioning project spearheaded by fellow composer Thea Zimple. Each composer responded to a stanza from Hoffmann's poem, with the resulting pieces combining as a song cycle woven together with the poetry.
The original scoring of this work was for flute and piano, but Greenaway re-worked the music specially for Barbara Jane Gilby and her exquisite 17th century violin made by the Guarneri family.
