Serenade was commissioned by Veronica Bailey for her husband Michael's 40th birthday in 2022, as a gift for the two of them to perform together and a contribution to the wider tenor brass repertoire.

Lyrical and expressive, the work unfolds like a 'song without words', with sweeping lines in the solo instrument and a rippling, harmonically rich piano part inspired by Saint-Saëns' The Swan.
