Dreams Dance at Dusk

Music of Sally Greenaway
Commissioned by Karen North

Flautists are invited into a world of enchanting nostalgia with Sally Greenaway's piece Dreams Dance at Dusk. The piece explores melancholy and strength in the face of adversity, reminding us to never lose sight of our dreams, even in the darkest of times.

Inspired by Somewhere Over the Rainbow (The Wizard of Oz), When You Wish Upon A Star (Disney), Smetana's orchestral masterpiece The Moldau (Vltava), and the soundtracks of John Williams, Dreams Dance at Dusk inspires flautists to explore their range, timbre, and expression in a beautifully evocative and bittersweet composition.

With a flowing rubato, particularly at cadence points, flautists are encouraged to showcase their musicality whilst maintaining a careful balance and synchronicity with the piano. Care should be taken to maintain confident rhythms and balance between the flute and piano. The piece is scored in the compound time signature of 6/4, which should not be confused with 3/2.

Dreams Dance at Dusk stirs the imagination with its alluring character that evokes hope and resilience in the face of adversity. As such, it is ideally suited as a captivating performance piece and would made an excellent 'own choice' selection for a music examination.
