Dig This Mallow

This fun big band piece is a cross between a swung version of a New Orleans Feel and a standard swing feel. Fantasia

Inspired by the late Classical and early Romantic eras, the piece is inspired by Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart and perhaps a little bit of Debussy (and some modern-day film inspiration). Commissioned by Canberra Grammar School as part of their Silver Anniversary of the Evening of Fine Music, August 2011.

Written in 3 short movements: The opening movement is 'Allegro quasi fantasia' with a shimmering piano accompaniment (and hints of Dr Who). The middle movement is 'Largo - molto legato e espressivo' with a soaring lead clarinet line reminiscent of Mozart's famous Clarinet Concerto. The second movement segues into the final movement, a fast and exciting 'Maestoso' with hints of Pirates of the Caribbean.

The composer has since created an arrangement for string quartet (or quintet) with piano.

Stay Awhile

This evocative piece was written as a gift for Woden Valley Youth Choir (scored for SA with a stunning, reflective piano accompaniment). It has since been re-arranged for a capella SATB divisi, for Luminescence Chamber Choir.

The lyrics are about overcoming adversity or difficult times: to comfort and inspire when feeling lost or caught up in life's events.

"If the moon goes out I will light a star,

If you're feeling down,
I will raise you up and hold you close awhile."

Interlude

Originally written for the female jazz vocal quartet Clever Sunday, this piece has been performed at music festivals and concerts around Australia. There are several versions of the piece available – for SATB vocal ensemble, instrumental quartet, and flexible jazz ensemble.

Aurora Musis Amica

Opening with a soundscape reminiscent of the dawn bursting into colour over a still lake, the piece unfolds into an uplifting and hopeful fanfare before fading back into a wash of colours for the final bars.

Not a traditional fanfare, the piece evokes images of Canberra, Australia located between Sydney to the North and Melbourne to the South. The opening bowed metallic percussion give a sense of that first ray of light coming from the horizon over Lake Burley Griffin and the towering National Carillon. With an ascending fifth, from G to D, the French Horn summons the sun to rise further, stirring the Australian wildlife. In its entirety, the opening is a vivid crescendo leading to a remarkably clear and rich blue sky as Solo Trumpet gives the first statement of the fanfare, with a dance-like harmonic underpinning from the woodwinds.

(program notes written by Eric Posner)

Here I am, contemplating the dawn again.
This early morning time has become irresistible,
a moment with my thoughts and with awesome splendor.
Often there are no words that can express the awareness
of the universe as I watch light wash over the horizon.
Dawn is friend of the muses.
Aurora musis amica.
