Stay Awhile

SATB a-capella (optional piano accompaniment)

This delicate and uplifting piece was written as a gift for Woden Valley Youth Choir, and was premiered in 2008. The lyrics are about overcoming adversity or difficult times: to comfort and inspire when feeling lost or caught up in life events:

"If the moon goes out I will light a star, and brighten up your heart. If you're feeling down, I will raise you up and hold you close awhile ... if your hope is lost I will find a way – I'll take us home one day."

Look to This Day
Baritone Voice, Piano

Commissioned by: Patrick Baker

Inspired by the poetry of Kalidasa (India, c. 5th Century CE), the lyrics are loosely based on an English translation of his poem 'Look to This Day'. The vocal part is challenging but very cantabile, and the piano accompaniment supports in an 'art song' style with moments of shimmering and restrained grandeur.

Look to this day, for it is life, it's life! The very life of life. In its brief course lies the truth of one's existence. The bliss of growth. the glory of action. The splendour of achievement are but experiences of time. For yesterday is but a dream, and today well-lived makes tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well therefore this day. Such is the welcome to the ever new dawn.

Resonance
SATB a capella

Commissioned by: The Resonants

Resonance explores the process of a little note growing into the power of song, with lyrics by Resonants chorister Kirsten Duncan. The work celebrates the unifying and transformative power of song, showcasing the beauty and passion of a capella voices. Greenaway brings musical life and imagery to the Duncan's poem. Given the skill of this ensemble, Greenaway was able to explore more colourful composition tchniques such as clusters and featured moments for soloists.

A sound begins deep inside,
softly, shyly, sound emerges, whispering, wafting, set adrift.
Fragile ember floating on warm breath into the void...
Silence.
A note so intimate it carries the self into the unknown.
A spark, the embers combining, nurturing the passion to sing.
Voices entwine; Notes string into melody
Creative humanity
Aching beauty
The magic of harmony speaks across all divides.
The universal joy: the power of song.

Lyrics adapted from a poem by Kirsten Duncan.
